The Map is the Territory
A story is what happens when flawed characters enter a plot and meaningfully change as a result. The Story Map, a powerful tool that structures our Novel Boot Camp curriculum, is a visual representation of this movement, a holistic diagram of the core elements that make successful stories work, and of the symbiotic relationships between these elements.
Unlike most diagrams and approaches, the color-coded Story Map is easy to understand and apply. Simple and pragmatic, it can be used as a learning tool to explain the foundational elements of story, from the most concrete (Inciting Incident, Revelation, etc.) to the most abstract (Theme, Voice, etc.); as a planning and structuring device to outline and write a long-form story from beginning to end; as a revision tool to strengthen the foundational elements of an already drafted story; and more.
Whether you have only an inkling of what your story's about or a complete draft, the Story Map will strengthen the foundational elements of your project and take your writing into bold new territory.
